Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a medicinal herb found only in the rain forests of Brazil. It is an adaptogen, a non-toxic botanical known to help the body deal with and reduce the effects of stress, and to produce a “normalizing” influence on the body (promoting homeostasis, or a state of equilibrium).
For thousands of years, Brazilian Indians have used this versatile plant as a food, medicine and stimulant source. They also use guarana to cope with extreme heat, gain energy for long journeys, and to suppress hunger.
Now on closer examination, it is the dark seeds contained in the red-berry fruit of the guarana plant that harbor its key ingredients. Of interest are three main constituents, called xanthine alkaloids, which account for the therapeutic effects mentioned above. The guarana’s caffeine stimulates but is “buffered” by the calming neurine and cardiovascular effects of the theobromine and theophylline, both of which have been shown to stimulate the nervous system, enhance alertness and reduce fatigue.*

Caffeine

Theobromine
Theobromine is a xanthine alkaloid best known as the “feel-good” substance in chocolate. It is a diuretic and vasodilator, which means it literally widens blood vessels, and may also lower blood pressure while increasing blood flow to the brain. Theobromine has stimulative effects on the body, has positive effects on serotonin levels (hence the “feel-good” effect), and has been shown to relax bronchi muscles in the lungs.
Theophylline
Theophylline is a methylxanthine that stimulates the central nervous system, enhances alertness and alleviates fatigue. It is also known as a bronchial smooth muscle relaxant.
