More about Spirulina
Spirulina’s (Spirulina platensis) actions in promoting health have been documented in hundreds of scientific studies over many years. Spirulina and the components that make up spirulina have been shown to be powerful antioxidants that enhance your body’s own inflammatory response and promote normal histamine function. Spirulina also has properties that promote and support normal and healthy digestion, circulation, liver function, vision, blood sugar levels, immune system function, memory function, and cholesterol levels. Because spirulina in and of itself is a nearly “complete” food, it is also a great source of energy.
World renowned alternative cancer therapies expert Ralph Moss, PhD (cancerdecisions.com) says that “my own advice is to get a good spirulina supplement and take it every day. Also, make sure that you get plenty of sunshine and a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables. And of course, do not use tobacco, and drink alcohol only in moderation.”
Spirulina has been used for centuries as a significant food source by many different cultures around the world, and remains a natural super food today. Spirulina contains antioxidants, essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, phytochemicals, a wide array of amino acids, and many vitamins and minerals, all of which boost your immune system. It has more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, and more good fats (GLA/EFA) than evening primrose oil.
Spirulina is, pound for pound, gram for gram, the world’s best source of protein. It is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all the essential amino acids. Due to its cell wall structure, it is also the most digestible protein available, far better than any meat or fish sources. This can be especially important for people with digestive issues.
Spirulina’s brilliant color is due to its high phytochemical (phyonutrient) content which includes both phycocyanin and chlorophyll.
Phycocyanin (or C-Phycocyanin) is a blue-green pigmented biliprotein that research shows helps promote normal immune function. It is a natural antioxidant, and several scientific studies have shown that phycocyanin possesses properties that enhance the body’s natural inflammatory response.
Another pigment in spirulina is chlorophyll, which many have said is one of the body’s best detoxification substances. Chlorophyll is actually very similar in make-up to hemoglobin, which is a molecule in the bloodstream that transports oxygen around to various parts of the body. Chlorophyll has the remarkable ability to remove environmental toxins from the human body; for example, heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium, in addition to chemicals related to fertilizers and other environmental hazards. As such, chlorophyll helps to promote healthy liver function.
Spirulina is one of the best sources of carotenoids, which are natural pigments that are mostly attributed to the red, orange and yellow colors found in plant material. Carotenoids are natural antioxidants, and protect the body at the cellular level. Recent studies have indicated that in addition to antioxidant capabilities, carotenoids may actually facilitate cellular communication. This has implications on many levels, most notably on the body’s maintenance of normal cell division. One of the most prevalent carotenoids in spirulina is beat-carotene, which can be converted by the body into usable Vitamin A.
According to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, in an appearance on the Oprah show where he mentioned spirulina as one of his “10 Superfoods”, “an ounce of concentrated green foods contains much more beneficial phytonutrients than found in one ounce of green vegetables.”
Spirulina is also an excellent source of naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals. This is important as several studies have shown that vitamins, in their natural state as found in plant material, are more bioavailable than synthetic vitamins – that means that “natural” vitamins inherent to spirulina and other plants are more easily absorbed by your body than vitamins bought in a bottle from a store shelf. One of the most prevalent vitamins in eternal core is Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the synthesis of red blood cells and the maintenance of a healthy nervous system, and also needed to make DNA.
A few words about Microcystin
There is a species of blue-green algae that is harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon called Aphanizomenon flos-aqua, also known as AFA. AFA is marketed by several companies who harvest the algae from the lake, dry it, and encapsulate it for sale as a nutritional supplement. While AFA may be safe for consumption, there are times on Upper Klamath Lake when a bloom of another blue-green algae, M. aeruginosa, produces a potent neurotoxin called microcystin. Studies have shown that microcystin exposure, even at low levels of exposure, may accumulate in the liver and lead to eventual liver cancer or other disease of the liver. For more detail, see a study by Gilroy DJ, Kauffman KW, Hall RA, Huang X, Chu FS. Environ Health Perspective. 2000 May; 108(5):435-9.
Agebest Basics® guarantees that our blue-green algae products are certified 100% microcystin- free.
A word of caution regarding phenylalanine which naturally occurs in spirulina
Spirulina contains all the amino acids, including phenylalanine. Therefore, our label contains a warning about our product that reads Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenyalanine.
Individuals with a genetic disorder known as phenylketonuria do not produce an enzyme that digests phenylalanine. It may be alright for those with PKU to use this supplement because the presence of all of the other essential amino acids balances the high levels of phenylalanine. However, phenylalanine may build up in the body, possibly causing eczema, seizures, and brain damage. It is always best to check with your healthcare provider if you have PKU before using this supplement.
