More about Spirulina

Spirulina’s (Spirulina platensis) contribution to good health has been well documented in scientific studies over many years. With well-earned reputations as powerful antioxidants, Spirulina and its components enhance the body’s own inflammatory response and promote normal and healthy histamine function.*

Spirulina also has properties that support normal and healthy digestion, circulation, liver function, vision, blood sugar levels, immune system function, memory function, and cholesterol levels.* And because spirulina in and of itself is nearly a “complete” food, it is also a great source of energy.

Ralph Moss, Ph.D., world renowned alternative medicine expert, is clearly a fan. “My own advice is to get a good spirulina supplement and take it every day,” he says. “Also, make sure that you get plenty of sunshine and a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables. And of course, do not use tobacco, and drink alcohol only in moderation.”

For centuries, cultures around the world have used spirulina as a significant food source and today, it remains one of nature’s super foods. Aside from its antioxidants, spirulina contains essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, phytochemicals, a wide array of amino acids, and a variety of vitamins and minerals, all of which boost the immune system.

And if that’s not enough, Spirulina has more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, and more good fats (GLA/EFA) than evening primrose oil. It yields more nutrition per acre than any other food grown, and is, pound-for-pound, gram for gram, the world’s best source of protein. Spirulina is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all the essential amino acids. Also, due to its cell wall structure, it is the most digestible protein available, far better than any meat or fish sources, which is especially important for people with digestive issues.

Pigments with Punch

Spirulina’s brilliant color is due to its high phytochemical (phyonutrient) content which includes both phycocyanin and chlorophyll.

Phycocyanin (or C-Phycocyanin) is a blue-green pigmented biliprotein that helps promote normal immune function.* It is a natural antioxidant that scientific studies have shown possesses properties that enhance the body’s natural inflammatory response and promote normal and healthy histamine levels.*

Chlorophyll, one of the body’s best detoxification substances, is a green pigment. Very similar in make-up to hemoglobin (a molecule in the bloodstream that transports oxygen around the body), chlorophyll has the remarkable ability to remove environmental toxins such as mercury and fertilizers from the human body. As such, chlorophyll helps to promote healthy liver function.*

Spirulina is also one of the best sources of carotenoids, natural pigments responsible for most of the red, orange and yellow colors found in plant material. Carotenoids are natural antioxidants, and protect the body at the cellular level.* One of the most prevalent carotenoids in spirulina is beta-carotene, which can be converted by the body into usable Vitamin A. Recent studies have indicated that in addition to these antioxidant capabilities, carotenoids may actually facilitate cellular communication. This has implications on many levels, most notably on the body’s maintenance of normal cell division.

A few words about Microcystin

Aphanizomenon flos-aqua, also known as AFA, is a species of blue-green algae harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon that is encapsulated for sale as a nutritional supplement. While AFA may be safe for consumption, there are times on the lake when a bloom of another blue-green algae, M. aeruginosa, produces a potent neurotoxin called microcystin.

Studies have shown that microcystin exposure, even at low levels of exposure, may accumulate in the liver and lead to eventual liver disease. For more information, see a study by Gilroy DJ, Kauffman KW, Hall RA, Huang X, Chu FS. Environ Health Perspective. 2000 May; 108(5): 435-9.

Agebest Basics® guarantees that our algae products are certified 100% microcystin-free.
